TED TALK
why we need to end the era of orphanages
This TED talk was very interesting, at first, I was a little confused by the title of the TED talk because of the title is “why we need to end the era of orphanages”. This title caught me by surprise because from what I knew orphanages was a place that helps children in need and who don’t have families. As I continued to watch this TED talk I learned that most orphanages don’t care or even take care of the children they do the opposite.
Tara Winkler points out that most orphanage owners don’t have the best intentions for the children and that most orphanages attract tourist, volunteer, and donators to help the orphanage but the money never ends up being used for the care of the children. Tara Winkler points out that orphanages having volunteers make it hard on the children because the volunteers eventually leave which makes the children feel neglected, all the children want is a family and someone to care for them and give them love.
I thought that her points were very interesting because you would not think that tourists and volunteers would be a part of the problem. Until I heard the facts on why and the reasons behind it. This TED talks states that most orphans come from poor families that can’t provide for them, this reminded me of the article “when working 2 fast food jobs 16 hours a day still isn’t enough”. Mr. Wise at a young age had to get a job to help provide for his family. This TED talk was very interesting it opened up my mind to certain issues, this associates with the American dream because hopefully one when these little children find a home they are going to have high hopes for the future and have goals they want to achieve.
